From the establishment of the world’s first kerosene refinery in 1854, to the ongoing cleanup of the country’s largest terrestrial oil spill, to the current environmental justice impacts stemming from National Grid’s 117 acre Liquified Natural Gas facility - Newtown Creek has a long and troubled history with fossil fuel production, storage, and pollution. We will see many of the historic and current operations along the Creek, learn more about the hazards they present, and discuss paths towards a cleaner energy future.Start: Manhattan Avenue Street End ParkEnd: Cooper ParkWe encourage those joining to be fairly comfortable bicyclists – this route has adverse street conditions and frequent truck traffic. We ask that all attendees fill out a liability waiver and photo consent form prior to joining, found .Please bring your own bicycle (in good working condition!) and helmet, along with a water bottle, snacks, and weather-appropriate clothing. We will have limited staff in attendance to navigate and provide support.
