BAX class series: Sarah Chien
This floorwork training class expands our relationship to the floor to include all surfaces of the room and our bodies. There are pathways through our body that help us go into, out of, and through the floor. What if floorwork itself was a path to explore connection, multi-dimensionality and even improvisation? How can we each become a conduit between earth and sky, one person and another? Rooted in Flying Low and Passing Through (David Zambrano), with inspiration from qi-gong and other forms, I share my explorations for moving through space dynamically, energetically and creatively with other humans.
Class begins with an improvisation based warm-up inspired by the group improvisation score called Passing Through. Students walk, run, and weave between eachother awakening the reactivity and connection between feet, hands, center of body and floor. Then we move into Flying Low phrasework, focusing on understanding efficient safe pathways for going into and out of the floor. Class doesn’t necessarily culminate in a phrase but rather progresses through solo and group investigations of how to combine going into and out of the floor with relating to a whole room of shifting bodies.
Anyone with an exisiting movement practice and open mind is welcome. There may be simple inversions and we will touch our own and other’s bodies.
Recommended clothing: Long pants for sliding and a shirt/layer that covers your shoulders.
