32K562 Student Engagement
Supporting All Learners Through Hands-On Experiences
About the School
Evergreen Middle School for Urban Exploration (EMS) is a Title I school located in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn. The school was founded on the idea that children learn best when given the opportunity to explore their environment through fieldwork and other hands-on activities. EMS sees their school as a professional learning environment where students, staff, parents and their community work together to support student learning. They recognize the urgency of their work and support each other to persevere in achieving success for every student.
About the Visit
At this Showcase, visitors will learn how interactive cooking and gardening lessons support increased student engagement, accessibility, and language acquisition. Visitors will see how Evergreen leverages their classrooms and garden to make cross-curricular, interdisciplinary connections and engage their larger community. At the end of the day, visitors will have the opportunity to think about how these practices could be incorporated into their own work even if they do not have access to a kitchen or garden.
