Leveraging Universal Literacy to Promote Consistency
About the School
P.S. 156 Waverly, located in the Brownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, is a pre-K–5 Title I school that seeks to provide a stimulating, challenging, and nurturing school environment for its students. Working in collaboration with parents, the school promotes high levels of academic achievement through small-group reading instruction. The school encourages its students to strive for both academic excellence and emotional well-being.
About the Visit
At this Showcase, visitors will learn how the staff at P.S. 156 and their ULit coach collaborate to support Universal Literacy in the early grades. Visitors will also learn how the school builds consistency around their instructional focus on guided reading. Visitors will see the five pillars of literacy in action in classrooms. Visitors will work with P.S. 156’s staff to plan how to leverage the Universal Literacy initiative in their contexts. This visit is intended for current U Lit schools. We encourage U Lit coaches to attend with the principals and teachers they work with.
