Creating a Learning Community that Promotes Student Empowerment
About the School
New Bridges Elementary is a pre-K-5 Title I school located in the Crown Heights neighborhood of Brooklyn. It is New Bridges Elementary's mission and vision to empower every child to learn and to grow into their best self intellectually, creatively, socially, and emotionally. New Bridges is an achievement-centered and academically rigorous environment driven by high expectations for scholars and their families. As a holistic school, they are focused on the whole development of each child through active engagement of all stakeholders, integration of the arts, and an emphasis on fostering the social and emotional development and education of their students.
About the Visit
At this Showcase, visitors will learn how New Bridges built a culture to ensure students feel safe and supported. Visitors will engage in “Bright Start,” a daily musical, affirmational community meeting which all students take part in. In classrooms, visitors will see the structures and routines that build confidence, ensure equity of voice, and promote students’ ownership of their learning. Later in the day, visitors will be given time to engage with teachers who are implementing these practices and plan how to bring these practices into their own work.
