Oasis Music warmly invites you to join an exceptional group of musicians, brought together by their love of timeless classical music and their desire to share it with the community. Starting with the warmly lyrical piece by Brahms, the program explores many facets of love across four centuries — from Handel and Mendelssohn to Brahms, and on to a recent work, "Emerald Sea," written by our own Eunji Lee for viola and cello, receiving its world premiere this evening, performed by the husband-and-wife team of Choi and Kim. Also featured are Gershwin's beloved show tunes, capturing the longing and exuberance of romantic love, as well as the bittersweet aria of longing and fading memory sung by a widower, from Korngold's opera Die tote Stadt. A child prodigy compared to Mozart for his precocious talent, Korngold was forced to flee Nazi Europe, eventually settling in Hollywood, where he became one of the most influential film composers of his time. "Longing" (연) is a contemporary Korean art song about a man addressing his lost beloved, his heart oscillating between hopeless yearning and willed resignation, unable finally to let go. Russian composer Prokofiev composed his Cello Sonata under the shadow of oppressive Soviet persecution and censorship, his fate hanging by a thread. In its energetic final movement, one feels the urgency of the composer's inner struggle to preserve not only his life but also his artistic soul. We are also very excited to feature two junior musicians, Joelle and Joeun, each exceptionally gifted — on oboe and violin respectively. They will perform lovely pieces by Mendelssohn and Handel, accompanied on piano by Yoon Chung, our music director for the concert. The concert closes with an ensemble performance of the evergreen, uplifting song that graced the ending of The Sound of Music — a fitting summation of the many facets of love that have threaded through the program.
