Led by artist ShaneWaltener, this participatory session introduces the processes of growing andharvesting flax, and demonstrates how it is processed, including making cordageand spinning linen thread. The workshop offers an engaging introduction tosustainable textile practices through hands-on learning.This workshop is part of the Creative Voices, Activist Voices: Sensory Stories ofCreative Communities an exhibition presenting findings from a research projectfunded by the Collaborate Fund (Centre for Cultural Value), and exhibition tourfunded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), jointly led by FunPalaces and sociologist Dr Katy Pilcher (Aston University), and presented at Greenerand Cleaner, Bromley 15th January – 9th February 2026.About the ArtistShane Waltener is an artist whose practice is rooted in ideas about ecology,sustainability and reuse. His work spans sculpture, installation, and performance,drawing inspiration from craft practice as well as dance and movement. He is thefounder of The Flax Exchange, a community-led project championing sustainabletextile practices with a focus on growing flax for fibre and making linen.
