Magistrates have existed for over 650 years, with the role developing over time to become an essential part of today’s judiciary. Virtually all criminal cases start in a magistrates' court with around 95% being completed there. The magistrates can acquitt those found not guilty or impose sentences such as fines, community orders or imprisonment.
On the day: arriving at the Court by 9:30 am you will meet your magistrate host and experience our justice system in action - seeing a trial and/or sentencing, and have the opportunity to ask questions about what you've seen.
