Join Us for the Queer Film Club by the Sexuality Research Group SPAIS – Screening Boys Don't Cry (1999)!Dear all,Since our second screening of the year falls on Trans Day of Remembrance, we are using this opportunity to screen the film Boys Don't Cry (1999).Boys Don't Cry is based on the true story of Brandon Teena, a trans man who was raped and murdered in a hate crime in rural Nebraska. The film, directed by Kimberly Peirce and starring Hilary Swank as Brandon, dramatizes his life as he attempts to find love and live authentically. The film has been criticised for its cisgender casting choice and its potential exploitation of trans lives. At the same time it has been praised for its heartfelt, complex, and innovative representation of trans* embodiment.In a growing climate of transphobia across the UK, we use this screening to remember those we have lost to violence and bigotry. It's a hard watch, full of both rural queer love and the sometimes harsh realities of trans existence.Content Warning: the film explores themes of gender dysphoria, transphobia, and physical and sexual violence (including rape).Event Details:?️ Date: Thursday, 20th November 2025?
