- **Event Description**: Following a sell-out screening earlier this year, we’re delighted to present an 80th anniversary screening of Alfred Hitchcock’s masterful espionage thriller Notorious as part of our Bristol In Focus programme.

Blending film noir tension with romantic melodrama, Notorious remains one of Hitchcock’s most elegant and suspenseful works. The story follows a young woman recruited to infiltrate a group of former Nazis in post-war South America, only to find herself caught between duty, danger and an unexpected love affair. Anchored by three extraordinary performances from Ingrid Bergman, Claude Rains, and Bristol’s own Cary Grant, it is widely regarded as one of Hitchcock’s finest achievements.

The film’s themes of secrecy, deception and wine cellars make it a particularly fitting choice for our Vintage Screenings series, where cinema is paired with carefully curated wine tasting experiences. Traditionally held in the atmospheric cellars of Averys Wine Merchants, this special summer edition takes place outdoors in Screen 2 at The Mall Gardens.

On arrival, guests will enjoy a sparkling wine, followed by a themed tasting of four wines selected to complement the film.

The Bristol connection is clear in the presence of Cary Grant, one of the city’s most celebrated cinematic sons. His performance adds an extra layer of resonance for this anniversary screening, bringing Hollywood history back, in a way, to his hometown.
