Join us for a hands-on workshop with textile designer Gemma Threadgate at the Newcastle Printmakers Workshop.

Overview of class:

Unleash your creativity in this one-day workshop where you'll explore the fundamentals of screen printing on fabric. Under Gemma's guidance, you'll bring your one or two-colour designs to life on your choice of a tote bag, t-shirt, tea towel, or fabric piece.

What to Expect:

  • Submit your one or two-colour design to Gemma a week before the workshop.
  • Learn the art of exposing images onto screens using emulsion and UV light.
  • Learn how to use a squeegee, screen and carousel for printing on textiles.
  • Master the techniques of screen cleaning, screen design removal, and setting designs on fabric.

What You'll Gain:

By the end of the day, you'll be equipped with the skills and confidence to:

  • Print on various textures and items.
  • Choose and mix inks effectively.
  • Select different screens and squeegees for different applications. 
  • Coat and expose screens for multi-color designs.
  • Cure fabric prints successfully.


What is provided:

  • Access to printing equipment for the day.
  • Practice fabrics for experimentation.
  • Film positives for your designs.
  • Inks (limited colours; contact us beforehand for specific colour requests).

There is a separate materials fee of $20 payable to Gemma on the day if you want her to supply a t-shirt, tote bag, or tea towel.


What participants need to bring:

  • Your one or two-colour design (submitted one week prior to the course).
  • An apron or old clothes suitable for printing.
  • Enclosed shoes for safety.
  • Pen and paper for taking notes.
  • Your own fabric items eg t-shirt, tote bag or piece of fabric. Items will be checked for suitability prior to class. Alternatively pay a materials fee on the day.
  • Food and drink

Bookings essential as places are limited to four. Minimum of 2 participants for the workshop to proceed.

Covid Safety: Participants must sign in, wash or sanitise their hands immediately upon entering the workshop and maintain physical distancing whenever possible during class. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, have visited a COVID case location, or have been directed to isolate, you must not attend class.

ABOUT THE TUTOR

Gemma Threadgate, the designer of her eponymous label Threadgate, is a textile designer focusing on screen-printed homewares and clothing. Her educational background includes completing CERT IV Fashion Design, Clothing Production at Newcastle TAFE and a Diploma in Textile Design at Sydney TAFE’s Fashion Design Studio.

With over a decade of experience, Gemma specialises in multi-colour yardage print designs on fabric. She has been recognised as a finalist in the textile category at The Design Files Design Awards and has showcased her work at Melbourne Fashion Week. Her designs have been featured in publications like The Design Files, Fashion Journal, Input Magazine, and 10 Magazine.

Gemma's expertise extends to fashion design, collaborating with designers like Emma Mulholland and Gary Bigeni in Sydney. After 15 years in London and Sydney, Gemma has returned to her hometown, Newcastle. As a recent member of the Newcastle Printmakers Workshop, she looks forward to getting back into the print studio after taking some time off to raise her daughter.

About The Host:
The NPW Newcastle Printmakers Workshop is Australias longest running open access workshops, established in 1979, 42 years ago and provides local practicing artists, students and beginners with access to equipment and work space. There are approximately 80 members and we run a variety of workshops and exhibitions each year.Ticket Policy:Most classes require a minimum number of participants to go ahead. This depends on a number of factors and the minimum is stated on the individual workshop booking page. In the event of the workshop being cancelled, your booking will be refunded in full. In the case of you not being able to attend a workshop you will be refunded as follows:Cancellations less than 24 hours before and no-shows on the day will not be refunded and a credit or transfer will not be issued.Cancellations within 1 week will receive a 35% refund.Cancellations between 1 and 2 weeks of the workshop will receive a 50% refund.Cancellations more than two weeks before the workshop receive a full refund less any third party booking fee.If Newcastle Printmakers, or the student, has to cancel due to Covid lock downs enforced after booking, a refund will be issued. This may be for a whole course, if there is more than one class in the course, dependant upon whether the course has started. For example if we go into lock down part way through a 5 week workshop a pro rata refund will be issued. Alternatively the student may chose to retain a credit for a future course with Newcastle Printmakers.
