Saidi Kanda & Mvula Mandondo

Hailing from Tanzania and learning his craft from his grandfather, Saidi Kanda has grown into one of the most talented multi-instrumentalists in African traditional music. His sweet, melodic voice, mesmerising stage presence, and infectious energy make every performance a feel-good experience.

A former member of the legendary Remmy Ongala’s Super Matimila Band, Saidi was honoured with the WOMAD Percussionist of the Year award in 1989. He later helped form the UK’s Orchestra Baboma and has played alongside some of the greats of African music, including Papa Wemba, Koffi Olomide, and Mose Fan Fan, to name a few.

Saidi Kanda is regarded as one of the finest performers in both traditional and contemporary African music. His latest album, Ambush, a collaboration with friend Edward Shearer, led to the creation of Mvula Mandondo.

LAKUTA

LAKUTA is a vibrant musical collective with roots stretching across Kenya, Tanzania, Ghana, Malaysia, Spain, and the UK. Founded by vocalist and percussionist Cicely Taylor in Brighton and fronted by Kenyan-Tanzanian vocalist Siggi Mwasote, the group draws on influences from jazz, funk, soul, and global roots music to forge a dynamic and modern sound.

The name Lakuta comes from Siggi’s mother tongue and is derived from Swahili, meaning “to find, meet, share, or feel full.” Their debut album, Brothers & Sisters, was released on Tru Thoughts in collaboration with renowned producer Nick Faber. As Siggi explains: “Brothers and Sisters are what we are—musically and spiritually. This is our gift to the brothers and sisters with whom we share this planet.”

Siggi's musical journey began in choirs and jazz trios, later performing with the English National Opera and making dance music records in London. Cicely’s background in Latin percussion and passion for vintage funk and world music led her to form a choir with Siggi—soon after, she joined Lakuta.

Their music, inspired by travels across Africa and South America, is a unique blend of Benga, Soweto, and Latin rhythms—infused with powerful, female-led vocals and a fresh funk-soul twist. Lakuta’s highly danceable mix of afrobeat, funk, and Latin grooves has seen them tour extensively, headlining stages and playing festivals including The Southbank Centre, Glastonbury, Latitude Festival, Funk & Soul Weekender, Brighton Fringe Festival, and many more.
