Writing Our Legacy is pleased to be a partner for this year’s Family Day Take Part at Brighton Dome and Brighton Museum. Join us for the return of Brighton’s biggest free celebration of arts, music, history, performances, spoken word culture and heritage.
This uplifting intergenerational event will take you on a journey across continents as we honour the outstanding contributions of the Global Majority and the diaspora communities in our vibrant city. Bring yourself or your family and friends and take part in a day full of joy, creativity, and connection! Whether you’re looking to get active, explore your artistic side, or just spend quality time together, there’s something for everyone!
This year’s highlights include:
Join us for a day celebrating diverse writing, arts, heritage, culture inspired by the South Downs, nearby habitats and our Global Majority and diaspora communities.
At Brighton Dome, join the free Hidden Sussex writing and art drop in (11am-3pm), where our creative practitioners will be on hand. This creative session is aimed at children, young people and their families.
Meanwhile, in Brighton Museum’s first floor Museum Lab (1.30-5pm) we have four great sessions for you to hear from our literary and diaspora communities in Sussex and beyond:
Hear newly commissioned Species Stories writing for children, in partnership with South Downs National Park Authority, plus hear about our new programme for Downs to the Sea, which focuses on recovery and resilience in wetland habitats, funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.
Experience new art work, sharings and readings from the culmination of a year-long project focused on BPOC communities around East Sussex, explored through writing, arts, heritage and culture, storytelling and placemaking.
Join Remi Graves for a reading of their new collection coal (Monitor, 2025) which explores ideas of elegy and the archive. Remi will also read works from their debut pamphlet with your chest, expect linguistically playful poems about queerness, fantasy and selfhood.
Celebrate our fifth magazine issue on the theme of rest with readings from contributors and have a chance to buy a copy too. Guest Co-Edited by Akila Richards and Sea Sharp.
This year’s festival is brought to you by African Night Fever in partnership with Brighton and Hove Black History, Writing Our Legacy, Brighton Dome and Brighton Museum.
Also check out other Arts events in Brighton and Hove, Music events in Brighton and Hove, Health & Wellness events in Brighton and Hove.
