The Varndean Christmas Physics Lecture

We are delighted to welcome three local scientists to talk about the real-world application of physics in their fields:

Amber Shepherd is a physics researcher from Brighton. She completed her degree in Chemistry at the University of Sussex and is now studying for her PhD in Physics. She works in the Ion-Trap, Cavity-QED and Molecular Physics group at Sussex where she is working on an experiment using quantum technology to search for dark matter - an invisible form of matter which makes up over a quarter of our Universe.

Dr Mark Selby is an engineer and entrepreneur who’s spent 20 years turning physics ideas into real-world tech — from electric vehicles to clean energy. He believes physics isn’t about solving equations, it’s about solving big problems, building cool stuff, and reimagining the world we live in.

Dr Duncan Gilbert is a consultant clinical oncologist at the Sussex Cancer Centre, and an associate professor of cancer and clinical trials at UCL. Together with colleagues from both medical physics and nuclear medicine he will talk about how the application of physics plays a crucial role in both the diagnosis and treatment of patients with cancer and what the future might hold.
