- **Event Description**: Discover central Brighton and hear about its unusual history - including three centuries of Jewish life in the city.About this EventMarc will be pleased to guide you through the vibrant mini‑city of Brighton, a lively South Coast seaside destination just an hour away from central London. Famous for its long pebble beach, traditional pier and vibrant bohemian character, its maze of 18th‑century lanes, quirky shops and elegant Regency architecture make it one of the UK’s most popular coastal cities attracting over nine million visitors each year. Brighton boasts a fascinating history that has evolved over the last three centuries - from a sleepy fishing village to a Georgian spa town and royal destination, Victorian holiday resort, target for the Luftwaffe and the IRA, and magnet for 1960s youth culture. Todays Brighton is a renowned playground for visitors and residents alike, with a wide choice of restaurants, hotels and entertainment options. In addition to its famous vibe and eccentricity, the city is home to two universities, a Premier League football club, and one of Britain’s largest LGBTQ+ communities. Our walking tours explore this rich heritage, from the magnificent Brighton Dome and Royal Pavilion (George IV’s early‑19th‑century fantasy palace) to varied neighbourhoods including North Laine, The Lanes, Victorian Brighton's Town Hall and the seafront. Along the way you’ll hear stories spanning three centuries - including famous visitors and events, wartime air raids, lost seaside piers, and concerts by the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, Abba and others. Starting at Brighton's 1840's railway station a mile inland, we'll finish at the equally historic Palace Pier where you can enjoy views of the Brighton seafront and the magnificent South Downs’ chalk cliffs that overlook the English Channel, and perhaps sample some fish and chips or a cheeky ice cream whilst you people-watch and take in the sea air.For those interested in cultural history, this version of my Brighton city tour also explores three centuries of Jewish life in Brighton, set within the wider context of a millennium of Jewish history in Britain. As we wind through the city’s central streets and alleyways, we’ll see key sites with a Jewish connection (including the exterior of the imposing 19th century Middle Street synagogue), and learn about notable Jewish residents, institutions and events that have helped to shape this unique seaside city. Did you know that Brighton has had Jewish MP's, Mayors and even a chief of police?Join my informative walking tours of bohemian Brighton or elegant Hove to hear fascinating stories about three centuries of people and events. Tours are available in either English or French.
