Experiencing a bear hunt is an exciting way to enjoy the outdoors, spend quality time with family and friends, and learn about one of Maine’s most elusive big game species. Bear hunting and trapping are important components in Maine’s conservation efforts and black bear management, and Maine provides excellent opportunities in many areas across the state.The seasons start in late August, offering hunters more time afield, and this year, youth bear hunters have a second day set aside just for them to get started.Maine has a healthy and stable population of black bears – the largest in the eastern United States. Since black bears do not have any natural predators, hunting and trapping helps keep the population at a number where bears and their environment remain healthy.What to Expect:This workshop includes the exam and certification in bear trapping and goes into greater depth than the standard safety course. The program blends hands-on learning in the field as well as an informational classroom portion.
