The most common recognizable image of Sherlock Holmes involves the deer stalker hat and the curved Calabash pipe. We know that in the canon, Sherlock never donned such a cap, with the possible exception of a couple of stories and never smoked a Calabash, but the image persists in the shared public image of Sherlock. Sidney Pages introduced the hat and William Gillette the pipe. However, it was Gillette’s stage portrayal of Sherlock that cemented the imagery in the public’s mind. This begs a question.
