Our Own Hands is a temporary exhibit on view in the Blue Bell Gallery at the Brenham Heritage Museum during the month of February. This exhibit pays tribute to the early Black-owned businesses and entrepreneurs who helped shape the economic and cultural landscape of Washington County. In a rural setting where opportunity was often limited, Black community members relied on creativity, skill, and determination to build livelihoods for themselves and their families.
Through photographs, artifacts, and stories, Our Own Hands explores how entrepreneurship and ingenuity took hold, revealing an undertold history that speaks to the power of self-belief, resilience, and strong community networks. These businesses were more than places of commerce; they were centers of connection, pride, and identity.
