- **Event Description**: The Annual Meeting of the Fluvanna Historical Society will take place on Sunday, October 19 at 2pm at the Bremo Slave Chapel. We will celebrate the accomplishments of our outgoing board and staff members, including Marvin Moss, Judy Mickelson, Tricia Johnson, and Anne Reed, and hold elections for board member replacements. Light refreshments will be provided.

The Bremo Slave Chapel is a simple Gothic Revival board-and-batten structure built in 1835 for the enslaved African Americans at John Hartwell Cocke’s Bremo Plantation, on a site known as Chapel Field. It is Virginia’s only known slave chapel and highlights Cocke’s deep Christian faith and feeling of responsibility for the religious education of those he enslaved. The Bremo Slave Chapel fell into disuse after the Civil War, and in 1884 it was moved to its current location in the village of Bremo Bluff to serve the local Episcopal parish. In 1924, it was converted to a parish hall for the present Grace Episcopal Church. The Bremo Slave Chapel is on the National Register of Historic Places.
