Juan Cantone and Virginia Cutillo will be teaching a 3-day intensive workshop mini-series.

DETAILS

No partner is necessary to join. This series is designed for intermediate and advanced dancers comfortable with basic steps, figures, and sequences. Advanced beginners willing to challenge themselves are welcome to join.

Workshops are scheduled each day from 12:30 to 5:30 at the 118 Elliot Gallery, with an hour-long break in the middle.

Plenty of snacks are provided during the break to boost your energy.

COST

$80 for one day, $215 for the series

TOPIC

The theme of this 3-day exploration will be IMPROVISATION.

We will start each day with exercises to improve our balance, posture, precision, fluidity, and ease of movement. This will aid in expanding the dynamic range of our movement. It will also prepare us to handle new situations with ease and calm.

Then we work on partner communication, exploring how changes in energy level, timing, and direction of the lead affect followers' response. We explore variations as tools of expression.

Adding a music layer to our exploration will help us build connections between musical patterns and movement patterns. We will play with tempo changes, pauses, and various musical textures.

And then, armed with all these tools, each of us will endeavour to express his/her response to the music and the moment, personal story, dream, desire, etc through the movement with the partner.

JUAN CANTONE
dancer, teacher, choreographer, musician

I see tango as a metaphor for life. To me it is a philosophy, a lifestyle, a language, an incredible culture and of course the most amazing dance in the world. Tango is an art form not experienced by the individual, but in harmony with each other. It is about connecting, improvising and creating that special energy. In my philosophy we can overcome our own boundaries and differences by understanding tango. As we improve, we do not individualize, we become one.
As a teacher, I combine my philosophy with my experience, technique and positive energy. I like to create an atmosphere where I connect dancing to daily lives. I emphasize the importance of technical skills with creation of muscle memory and connection from the heart. In my teaching I focus on the capacity that everyone has to go beyond their boundaries and reinvent themselves in a new way. We are all capable of strong, heart felt rhythm and movement …all we have to do is learn to understand and speak the language.

Here is a fireside chat with Juan on ‘Humans of Tango’ produced by Liz Sabatiuk: https://www.humansoftango.com/e/disappearing-so-tango-can-talk-with-juan-cantone/
Give it a listen while cooking your favourite seasonal root veggies, pressing cider or just lazing around. It will warm your heart and make you want to study with Juan and Virginia.
