TOPIC

Inhabit Your Tango: A Journey Into Improvisation

How do you inhabit your tango?

Join us for a 3-day deep dive into the art of improvisation—the living, breathing heart of tango.

Each day will begin with focused movement practice to refine balance, posture, precision, fluidity, and ease. We’ll explore how different parts of the body connect and communicate—like the relationship between the free knee and the opposite hip—to make our movement more grounded, expressive, and decisive. These exercises expand the range of what’s possible and prepare us to meet the unexpected with calm and confidence.

From there, we’ll turn to partner communication, studying how subtle variations in energy, timing, and direction shape our shared dance. Together, we’ll investigate how leaders and followers co-create a dynamic, wordless conversation—and how the follower’s interpretation enriches that dialogue.

Adding a musical layer, we’ll connect movement and melody, experimenting with tempo changes, pauses, and musical textures. As we integrate these elements, each dancer will be invited to express their own response to the music and the moment—to inhabit tango fully, as a reflection of one’s story, dream, or desire.

Don’t miss this rare opportunity for deep study and inspired exploration with two exceptional artists.

ABOUT

VIRGINIA CUTILLO

Tango dancer, teacher, choreographer, and actress

Virginia Cutillo is a Buenos Aires–based tango dancer, teacher, choreographer, and actress. A graduate of the National Institute of Physical Education, she also studied dance, mime, and theater at the San Martín and Ricardo Rojas Cultural Centers.

Her tango formation bridges generations—studying with both the old milongueros and the new guard—allowing her to forge a style that blends deep tradition with contemporary artistry.

Virginia has performed and taught throughout Buenos Aires in iconic spaces such as La Viruta, Salón Canning, the Teatro de la Comedia, El Galpón de Guevara, and the Kirchner Cultural Center, as well as across Europe in Poland, Germany, Italy, Russia, Switzerland, and Sweden.

For five years, she was a member of Compañía DNI Tango, directed by Dana Frígoli, and later founded Ensayo Abierto, a creative laboratory for tango research and choreographic exploration.

JUAN CANTONE

Tango dancer, teacher, choreographer, and musician

For Juan Cantone, tango is far more than a dance—it’s a philosophy, a language, a way of life. To him, tango embodies connection, improvisation, and the beauty of shared experience.

As a teacher, Juan combines his deep musical understanding with clear technique and contagious enthusiasm. He creates a learning environment where movement connects to daily life, encouraging dancers to cultivate both skill and self-awareness. His approach emphasizes precision, muscle memory, and connection from the heart—empowering students to transcend their limits and discover their own expression within the dance.

“Tango is not experienced by the individual, but in harmony with others. As we improve, we don’t individualize—we become one.”

Get to know Juan’s philosophy more deeply in his fireside chat on Humans of Tango by Liz Sabatiuk:
