East and West (1923, 84 mins), is a delicious comedy that bears the distinction of being the earliest surviving Yiddish language film and the earliest recorded performance of Molly Picon, then just 25, already on the path from Yiddish theater to a long career in film, radio, television, and worldwide stage tours with her husband and frequent co-star, Jacob Kalich. A wonderful role model for the renegade in all of us, best known today for her role as Yente the matchmaker in Fiddler on the Roof (1971), Picon shines here as a spirited New York girl who loves boxing, eating, and stirring up trouble— and could not be more different from her religious European relatives. Her New World ways turn the lives of her shtetl relatives upside down, much to the exasperation of her father. However, Molly's crazy antics escalate when she meets her match in an engaging young scholar (Kalich), who forsakes tradition and joins the secular world to win her heart.

The film features charming scenes of Yom Kippur services, Shabbat dinner complete with noodle soup, lively dancing, and a riotous finale in Vienna. Beautifully restored by Filmarchiv Austria, East and West premiered in 2025 with Alicia Svigals and Donald Sosin’s klezmer-and-Viennese score, earning Best Feature at the Santa Barbara Jewish Film Festival. This special performance is funded by the Sunrise Foundation for Education and the Arts.
