NEXT 2025: The NEXT 2025 Festival will bring five days of contemporary and experimental music, performances and discussions to Bratislava. The program will also include a workshop section focused on sound, technology and new approaches to creation.
╱ One of the two workshops of the NEXT 2025 festival is Improvisation Masterclass with Fred Frith ╱
Internationally renowned guitarist, multiinstrumentalist and composer 𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓭 𝓕𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓱 will lead a two-day long workshop with a final collective performance, i.e. masterclass, based on his very specific approach to improvisation, experimentation, performance and composition. The masterclass is intended for musicians experienced in improvised and experimental music. The workshop focuses on the 𝓵𝓮𝓪𝓻𝓷𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓹𝓻𝓸𝓬𝓮𝓼𝓼, and 𝓮𝔁𝓹𝓪𝓷𝓭𝓲𝓷𝓰 𝓹𝓻𝓪𝓬𝓽𝓲𝓬𝓮𝓼.

𝓕𝓻𝓮𝓭 𝓕𝓻𝓲𝓽𝓱 has been making noise of one kind or another for more than 50 years, starting with the rock collective Henry Cow, which he co-founded with Tim Hodgkinson in 1968.
Fred is best known as a pioneering electric guitarist and improviser, song-writer, and composer for film, dance and theater. His compositions have been performed by ensembles ranging from the Bang on a Can All Stars to Concerto Köln, from the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to the ROVA and Arte Sax Quartets, from Ground Zero to the Glasgow Improvisers’ Orchestra.
He has improvised with Derek Bailey, Han Bennink, Peter Brötzmann, Lol Coxhill, Joëlle Léandre, Phil Minton, Ikue Mori, Butch Morris, Bob Ostertag, Evan Parker, Zeena Parkins and many others; and—as session musician—recorded on albums by, for example, Brian Eno, The Residents, Robert Wyatt, The Swans, Violent Femmes, Material, Negativland, and John Zorn. He taught for twenty years at the legendary epicenter of American experimental music, Mills College from 1999 till his retirement in 2018; as well as co-directing (with Alfred Zimmerlin) the improvisation master’s program at the Musik Akademie in Basel, Switzerland.
