Join us to learn how to build culturally-responsive STEAM teaching!About this EventDesign Thinking Approach to Co-creating Science Curriculum in Museum-School Partnerships Using the Double Diamond Framework by Wei-Ting LiCollaborations between formal (schools) and informal (museums) educational institutions are often hindered by boundaries stemming from their differing missions, audiences, and objectives. This study addresses this challenge by employing the Double Diamond design framework to develop and refine an innovative curriculum co-creation model. This two-stage research first utilized the Delphi method with 29 teachers and museum staff to establish shared guiding principles. Subsequently, a professional learning community of educators from both institutions co-designed and pilot-tested a science curriculum. The findings revealed that schools and museums have complementary roles, with teachers focusing on foundational knowledge and museum staff on experiential learning. The model also proved highly effective in practice, successfully transforming museum resources into a science curriculum that was both engaging and aligned with the dimensions of science education. However, it also highlighted significant institutional constraints, primarily teacher workload and scheduling conflicts. This study concludes that while the Double Diamond framework can break practical boundaries, greater institutional flexibility and mutual understanding are crucial for sustaining these deep, valuable partnerships.Bridging Indigenous Ways of Knowing and STEAM Education: A Place-Based Approach from Taiwan by Lin-Chien TungAs educators around the world seek more meaningful and culturally responsive ways to teach science, this talk shares an approach from Taiwan that brings together Indigenous knowledge and STEAM education. Drawing on the Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of Indigenous communities in Taiwan, this work highlights how long-standing relationships with land, rivers, and oceans reflect deep ecological understanding, responsibility, and care for the environment. These perspectives offer valuable insights for rethinking how we teach sustainability today. In this presentation, I will introduce the Place-Based STEAM Sustainable Ocean Action Display Box, a hands-on, mobile learning tool developed through collaboration with Indigenous communities, educators, and museums. Through this approach, students engage with local culture, explore environmental issues, and learn by doing in ways that are meaningful to their own lives. Guided by the MUSIC model—Museum, University, School, and Indigenous Communities—this work emphasizes collaboration, connection, and community-based learning. It also reflects a Two-Eyed Seeing perspective, bringing together Indigenous ways of knowing and Western science. Rather than focusing only on knowledge, this approach encourages students to build relationships—with their environment, their culture, and their communities—and to take action toward sustainability.About the Presenters:Wei-Ting Li is a visiting scholar at Brandon University and a PhD Candidate in the Institute of Education at the National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan.Lin-Chien Tung is also a student in the Institute of Education at the National Sun Yat-sen University in Taiwan.
