- **Event Name**: Songs of Praise: Great English Choral Music from Purcell to Dove
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 20 Jun, 2026 at 07:00 pm
- **Event Description**: Join St Peter’s Singers for the final concert of their 2025–26 season in the beautiful surroundings of St John’s Church, Baildon.

Entitled Songs of Praise, this uplifting programme celebrates the rich tradition of English church music, bringing together some of the finest choral works written over the last three centuries. From the brilliance of Henry Purcell in the late seventeenth century to the contemporary voice of Jonathan Dove, the concert showcases the remarkable breadth, beauty and variety of the English choral tradition.

The evening opens with two contrasting masterpieces by Henry Purcell, including the radiant My Beloved Spake, before moving to Samuel Sebastian Wesley’s majestic Ascribe unto the Lord. Wesley has a special connection with Leeds, having served as organist of Leeds Parish Church, now Leeds Minster, where St Peter’s Singers rehearse today. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of his death.

Three much-loved motets by Charles Villiers Stanford demonstrate the expressive power of unaccompanied choral singing, ranging from the serene Beati quorum via to the jubilant double-choir setting Coelos ascendit hodie.

The second half features two outstanding works by Benjamin Britten. His joyful Jubilate in C, first performed at Leeds Parish Church in 1961, is paired with the imaginative cantata Rejoice in the Lamb, a colourful and deeply original setting of poetry by Christopher Smart. Full of vivid imagery, the work celebrates everything from cats and mice to flowers, stars and heavenly music.

The programme continues with Patrick Hadley’s tender setting of My Beloved Spake and Jonathan Dove’s luminous Seek Him That Maketh the Seven Stars, before concluding with Andrew Carter’s energetic Rejoice in the Lord Always. Carter, a former York Minster chorister and one of Yorkshire’s most respected composers, died earlier this year, making this performance a fitting tribute to his contribution to British choral music.

Founded in 1977, St Peter’s Singers has established a reputation as one of Yorkshire’s leading chamber choirs. Under the direction of Alexander Woodrow, the choir performs a wide range of sacred music from the Renaissance to the present day, combining familiar masterpieces with lesser-known gems.
