And what do they tell us about 1950s Britain?About this EventBetween 1948 and the 1960s, the UK enjoyed a stable period of film production including a diverse array of both ‘A’ films and ‘second features’ or ‘B films’, often made by independent producers working with small budgets.The crime film became the genre of choice for many producers. Ignored at the time by most critics, these films have since been re-discovered by film scholars and often re-classified as part of British film noir.We’ve selected a group of these films from the peak period in the 1950s, but are they really films noirs – and if so how are they related to the more well-known Hollywood noirs? Do they tell us anything about Britain in the 1950s, both in the stories they present and how the films themselves were produced?They proved to be an important training ground for directors like Hammer’s Terence Fisher, producers such as Cubby Broccoli and future stars like Stanley Baker. To attract audiences a Hollywood star like Victor Mature played against Diana Dors, with some of the films being released internationally, including in America. (UK 1956 – UK title Soho Incident) will be our full feature, with American star Faith Domergue and the Canadian actor Lee Patterson. The film includes excellent location work on the streets of Soho. It is a possible noircandidate in which Patterson’s penniless boxer is lured into gambling fraud by a gang led by Domergue’s brother.
