Complete the Florida Class D (Unarmed) Security Officer course — a state-approved, instructor-led program delivering the training required to apply for your Class D security license. This class focuses on legal responsibilities, observation & patrol techniques, emergency response, report writing, ethics, and the fundamentals required for entry-level unarmed security work.
What the course covers- Florida security laws, licensing rules, and ethical obligations.
- Use-of-force basics, de-escalation, and legal considerations for security officers.
- Observation, access control, and patrolling strategies.
- Emergency procedures (fire watch, medical response, evacuation).
- Report writing, communication, and professional conduct.
- Scenario-based drills, role-plays, and practical skills (classroom and dry exercises; no live weapons).
State training requirement & certification- Course length: This Class D course meets Florida’s required 40 hours of professional training for unarmed security officers. Upon successful completion you’ll receive the certificate needed to apply to the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services (FDACS) for your Class D license.
Who should attend- New hires seeking unarmed security employment (retail loss prevention, gatehouse, corporate security, event security).
- Individuals preparing to apply for the Florida Class D license.
- Current security staff needing formal, state-approved training or refresher certification.
Prerequisites & eligibility- Must be 18 years or older and meet FDACS eligibility standards (no disqualifying criminal history).
- Bring a valid photo ID (driver’s license or state ID). Fingerprinting and criminal background checks are required by FDACS as part of the licensing process — students are responsible for submitting fingerprints and the state application after course completion.
Logistics & requirements- Duration: 40 hours
- Format: Classroom instruction with practical, non-live drills.
- Materials: Course manual provided. Bring a notebook, pen, photo ID, and water.
- Testing & certificate: Students must complete the course and pass any required examinations to receive the completion certificate required for FDACS application.
Important notes- No live firearms — this is an unarmed security course. If you plan to pursue armed (Class G) licensing later, the Class D must be completed first; Class G requires additional training and in-person firearms qualification.
- Successful completion of this course does not automatically issue the state license — you must submit your FDACS application, fingerprints, and fees as required by FDACS.
Next steps & private training- We recommend follow-up private or on-the-job training to build hands-on skills and professional readiness for real work environments. Ask about our private coaching and onboarding packages (available separately).
- For employers: group scheduling and onsite classes available for teams — contact us for quotes.
