More Music, More Culture, More Community: The 2025 Voices of Fairwood Music Series returns with a fresh new vibe we're calling "Voices of Fairwood." Produced by the Arts & Cultural Heritage Division of the Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, this summer tradition, established in 2013 as the Fairwood Arts Festival, has grown into one of the most anticipated performing arts events in Prince George’s County, and this year includes the Celebrate Africa Festival!
This year's performances are a tribute to Prince George's County's multi-cultural nature, featuring the sounds of R&B, soul, jazz, funk, GoGo, and more. Our Celebrate Africa Festival continues to honor the contributions and impact of the African immigrant community in the DMV area. All concerts are FREE and open to the public!
Raised in Kingston, Jamaica in a community engrossed with several top reggae artists, Lenny Kurlou migrated to the United States at an early age, starting his career on dancehall sound systems as a DJ/Selector then later joining the Anthem Band as a singer. Over the years he has received several accolades including ‘Singer of the Year’, Songwriter of the Year, and Best Production of the Year at the D.C. Reggae Awards.
An electrifying group of musicians and a staple in the DMV’s Caribbean scene, Image Band was the first to win the Best Musical Band Award presented by the D.C. Caribbean Carnival, Inc., and hosts the largest annual New Year’s Eve event on the St. Croix Virgin Islands. While their versatility enables them to play various musical genres, including R&B, Hip Hop, Reggae, and Dancehall, Soca remains the heartbeat of this band.
The Gold Soul Movement is a collective of DMV-based artists and musicians celebrating the timeless, genre-blending power of soul and funk music. As a live band, they put on performances that connect generations and inspire unity. In this special performance, they will pay tribute to the legendary Sly & The Family Stone.
Since 1997, PHAZE II has been providing Smooth and Funky Jazz sounds on the local music scene in the Washington, D.C. area, by honing its craft of delivering quality music to their listeners. PHAZE II has embarked on a journey to show the world the many talents that this jazz band has to offer.
Ms. Kim presents The Kim Michelle Experience: where live R&B and Go-Go music intermix. This all-star ensemble boasts musicians who’ve honed their skills with Go-Go royalty and are ready to take you on an unforgettable musical journey. So, get ready to unleash a fresh sound unlike anything go-go has ever seen.
Founded in 2007 in Washington D.C., Be’la Dona’s unique style of Funk, Jazz, R&B and Rock commands audiences. Individually, the breadth of experience of each band member ranges from formal training in jazz, classical, opera, gospel, and R&B. Not only are they musicians, but they are also civic leaders and activists, businesswomen, educators, mothers, wives, and mentors who serve as role models to girls and women. Be’la Dona captivates the crowd and propels the power of womanhood to the forefront.
Trey Jones is a singer, songwriter, and vocal arranger celebrated for his awe-inspiring vocal range. Trey’s talent led him to a prominent role in the Grammy-Nominated Netflix Series, “Voices of Fire” where he continues to make appearances, while also singing background vocals for Angelica Baylor. Having graced renowned stages, Trey’s captivating presence has not only resonated with fans but also earned him spots on Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Kimmel.
Vocalist Vivian Taylor was born, educated, raised in S.E. Washington D.C. and attended Howard University. She has been a background artist to Queen Latifah, Beyoncé’s 2005 Kennedy Center Honors, AL Greene, Rahsaan Patterson, Melissa Etheridge, & Yolanda Adams. She starred in Rent on Broadway in New York from2005-2008, was a member of the Washington Opera, and a current member of the DeMoine, Iowa traveling opera company. Truly a vocalist not to be missed!
Just Fine: The Ultimate Mary J. Blige Tribute Band takes you back to your favorite days and times, giving you everything you remember about multi-award winner Mary J. Blige. This 7-piece band’s groove and sound provides you with amazing throwback memories, as well as the more recent feel-good vibes, from this musical icon. Led by professional recording drummer Rashad King (Tye Tribbett, Dooby Powell, Noel Jones) and lead vocalist Ms.Tre’Jae, who delivers the look and sound of her musical idol, Mary J. Blige.
R&B, Hip Hop, Jazz Fusion, And Funk, the sound and vibe cultivated by DMV based, Got My Own Sound, founded in 2011 by drummer Wes Watkins. Born in Baltimore and raised in Severn MD., Watkins, former drummer and Musical Director for Grammy Nominated artist Carolyn Malachi, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, and the Walker Redds Project, was inspired by watching and imitating his father’s drum style. Watkins was also heavily influenced by Go-Go, and at age 9, the enterprising young drummer organized his first band at school creating his own experience.
M-NCPPC Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County is pleased to announce its 8th annual Celebrate Africa Festival on September 28, 2025 – recognized in Prince George’s County, Maryland as African Heritage Month. The festival acknowledges the contributions and impact of the African immigrant community on Prince George’s County and the greater DMV area, and celebrates the beauty, vibrancy, and cultural relevance of the work of African artisans, crafts persons, musicians, and performing artists. The festival aims to promote cultural awareness and understanding between African immigrant and other communities.
