In this special collaborative workshop, Alicia and Til are excited to bring together their decades of experience in bodywork (Til) and Contact Improvisation (Alicia) to discover how combining these disciplines can open up new options for our moving, dancing, sensing and being.
They write: “This workshop in our ongoing collaboration explores balance and equilibrium—not as static states to achieve, but as dynamic conversations between physical and attentional adaptability and stability that unfold moment by moment.
Our upright balance emerges from an intricate symphony of systems: the rooting and responsiveness of feet, ankles, and knees; the organizing power of the pelvis; the fluid counterweights of our upper centers; the orienting intelligence of neck, head, and eyes; the subtle calibrations of the inner ear. Each contributes to our proprioceptive sense—that often-unconscious knowing of where we are in space—which in turn supports greater ease, efficiency, and flow in our movement.
Contact Improvisation is a spherical form in which any of the above systems can be turned upside down or sideways on ourselves.
In Contact Improvisation, we're constantly negotiating equilibrium—finding it, losing it, sharing it, playing with its edges. How do we remain internally stable yet responsive? How can we support another's balance while maintaining our own? How does our proprioceptive awareness inform the subtle adjustments that allow us to flow with the constantly shifting landscape of shared weight and momentum?
Through hands-on, solo, and partnered explorations, we'll systematically engage each major player in the balance system, discovering how enhanced proprioceptive awareness can expand our movement vocabulary and deepen our capacity for both grounded stability and fluid adaptability. We'll explore balance not as something to master, but as an ongoing dialogue with gravity, momentum, and connection.”
Prerequisite: at least some experience in Contact Improvisation. Appropriate for all levels and all bodies.
