In their busy specialized and subspecialized practices, healthcare providers are often hyper-focused on their area of interest that they neglect to look at the big picture. Sometimes, the clue to the patient’s diagnosis and, subsequently, their correct treatment lies in the big picture.

This is a one-of-a-kind anatomy course that focuses on looking at the big picture. While the primary target is dentists, any medical professional with interest in the head and neck and their relationship with the rest of the body will find this course valuable. The course is designed to show these relationships through evaluation of the patterns of motion and restriction on a fresh frozen cadaver and an observation of the effect of these patterns on the layers of anatomy from superficial fascia to internal organs. As Master Dissector Todd Garcia peels away the anatomical layers starting with a detailed discussion of the head and neck (including the TMJs, jawbones, airway, skull base, cranial nerves, superficial and deep neck and cervical spine) then moving on the rest of the body, these patterns will be revealed. The spacious lab set-up has several large screens displaying real-time video footage from 2-3 4K cameras positioned at multiple angles to zoom in and display the anatomy like you’ve never seen it before! Commentary on anatomy and teaching points relevant to clinical practice will be provided by Dr. Tamimi, Mr. Garcia and Ms. Burns, helping you to link the findings to the entire body. All participants will rotate to assist with cadaver handling and direct visualization and will be given ample opportunities to palpate structures, ask questions and hold insightful conversations with their like-minded peers and instructors.

Each head and neck section explored anatomically will also be reviewed radiographically by Dr. Tamimi. The participants will gain an intimate appreciation for the three-dimensional appearance of their patients’ structures and an understanding of how alterations in these structures will manifest in the rest of the body. This knowledge helps the dentist evolve into the role of “Physician of the Oral and Maxillofacial Complex” and gain an understanding of how structures distant to the jaws may influence the success of treatment, and how that success can be influenced by alterations secondary to clinical treatment.
