He directs the Becker Friedman Institute's Program on Foundational Research in Health Care Markets and Policies and is affiliated with the Economics Department and Law School. His research focuses on health economics.Born and raised in Sweden, Philipson earned his undergraduate degree in mathematics from Uppsala University and his MA and PhD in economics from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.Philipson has extensive government experience, serving as senior economic advisor at both the FDA and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services during the second Bush Administration.
