60 Franklin Street, Boston, United States
History At Play™ invites guests and lovers to step back in time and enjoy a romantic evening of delicious cocktails and even more delicious gossip. Venture to The Merchant (60 Franklin Street, Boston, MA), mere steps from the old Ticknor & Fields Publishing House. Boston was hailed as "the hub of the universe," according to Oliver Wendell Holmes and its notoriety came from its Victorian literary success. Ticknor & Fields was the greatest publishing house in the nation, if not the world, and its namesake Annie Fields knows every juicy detail about the love lives of its transcendental writers.
Love is love, and it takes many forms. Learn how famous writers handled being pricked by Cupid’s arrow, including: Nathaniel Hawthorne, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Harriet Beecher Stowe, and even a young Charles Dickens. And while Annie Fields loves to gossip about others, you will learn her story, including her Boston marriage to her “sister-hostess” Sarah Orne Jewett in their home on Beacon Hill.
Enjoy live accompanying music by harpist Melegie as well as a Dickens'-inspired cocktail created by the craft mixologists at The Merchant Kitchen & Drinks.
