- **Event Name**: From Sensors to Smart Systems
- **Event Start and End Date**: Thu, 24 Sep, 2026 at 06:00 pm – Thu, 29 Oct, 2026 at 06:00 pm (-04:00)
- **Event Description**: Learn how a machine makes sense of the world, and how to program sensors that make your own life better.About this EventMultisession Duration: 10 hrs completed over 5 days. By purchasing a ticket, you are committing to attend all meetings included in the multisession. Scroll down to reference the Agenda page to indicate which ticket to purchase for that session!Class DescriptionStudents learn how an electronic system makes sense of its surrounding environment — how physical phenomena like motion, distance, and proximity are converted into electrical signals, how those signals are processed by a microcontroller, and how sensors can make an electronic system smarter through real, working closed-loop behavior. The course builds toward a final capstone project — a people-tracking device that distinguishes between someone who taps an NFC tag versus someone who simply walks by — giving students a complete, functioning piece of hardware they wired and coded themselves. The materials fee for this class is $15. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts Venmo, Zelle, and Cash.Materials provided include:Arduino UnoBreadboardJumper wire kit (M-M, M-F)Potentiometer (10kΩ)HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensorMFRC522 NFC/RFID reader moduleExtra NFC tags (2–3 more)USB cable (A-to-B)Misc. resistors / small partsDigital multimeter (lending)Learning ObjectivesWhat a transducer is, and the distinction between sensors and actuatorsThe difference between analog and digital signals, and why both existCore signal concepts: resolution, sample rate, range/resolution trade-offs, and aliasingSources of sensor error: conversion error (quantization, aliasing), physical/external error (thermal effects, baseline drift, aging, hysteresis), electrical error (noise, power supply instability, wire resistance)How three real sensor types work: potentiometers (analog), ultrasonic range finders (digital timing), and NFC/RFID (digital protocol-based)The concept of feedback and closed-loop systems, including the sensor-brain-actuator modelFundamentals of how a microcontroller (Arduino) operates: timers, interrupts, GPIO, and communication protocols (SPI, I2C, UART)Basic circuit quantities — voltage, current, resistance, power — and how to measure them safely with a multimeter and other bench toolsHow to wire, code, integrate, and debug multiple sensors on a single microcontroller into one working systemInstructor - Khoi LyHi, I'm Khoi. I've spent the last nine years building robots that do strange things — a swimming snake that splits itself in half, a Braille display driven by tiny butane explosions, a mole robot that digs its own tunnels — which somehow turned into a PhD in soft robotics and a day job designing embedded systems and circuit boards. And behind all of these fascinating systems are the sensors that bridge the physical world with perception, giving our circuits a way to make sense of everything around them, and that's exactly what we'll chase in this class.Target AudienceA complete beginner is okay. The course is ideally better for high schoolers and up due to some mathematical explanations in the courseMaterials needed: (Brought by student)Laptop with the Arduino IDE installedPen and notebookClosed-toe shoesNatural fiber clothing (cotton), no loose sleeves or dangling jewelry, long hair tied backSafety glasses (available at the space if you don't have your own)Your Ticket IncludesAccess to A2's Electronic and Robotics and tools for the duration of the session.Class PoliciesAttire: Attendants should wear close-toed slip-resistant shoes (steel-toe work boots are ideal), long pants, and no loose-fitting clothing that could possibly get caught in machinery. Make sure to wear only natural fibers (i.e., cotton, wool, linen, etc) and bring reading glasses if needed for detailed work.Learn more about our class and ticket cancelation policies Here. Please email education@artisansasylum.com with any questions.*Sales end 24 hours before the start of the class to allow the instructor and staff time to prep.Sept 24th Start🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMSept 24th (1/5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMOct 1st (2/5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMOct 8th (3 /5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMOct 15th (4/5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMOct 22nd (5/5)Oct 29th Start🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMOct 29th (1/5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMNov 5th (2/5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMNov 12th (3/5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMNov 19th (4/5)🕑: 06:00 PM - 08:00 PMDec 3rd (5/5)Future SessionsTo Be Scheduled
