Join Leah Koenig to learn some of her favorites—and get a copy of her new book.About this EventNOTE: iphone and ipad users,to register for class if you don't see an orange "tickets" button at right. What’s on the Menu:Almond Kiss BlondiesChocolate SalamiAnd for dinner: Stuffed Tomatoes with Rice (Pomodori con Riso), Chicken with Peppers (Pollo con Peperoni) and Leafy Green Salad with Fennel, Pears and WalnutsDescription:It’s the best part of any good party: That table, large or small, where sweets are piled, waiting in the wings for their big moment. Leah Koenig has spent years chronicling the must-have sweets that are the most beloved by the Jewish diaspora. Her new book, "The Dessert Table: 100 Joyful Jewish Sweets," gathers a hundred of them, from Roman fig cookies to Hungarian-inspired doughnuts, into one collection. Join her for a hands-on evening at Milk Street that's built around two treats from the book, plus a dinner that looks back at where her cooking began. The night starts with a demonstration chocolate salami, a no-bake confection with roots across Jewish communities in Germany, Russia, Italy and Israel, where it goes by names like schokoladenwurst and naknik shokolad. You’ll see how chocolate, biscuits, dried fruit and nuts combine to form a whimsical, sweet impersonation of its savory namesake. Then, with Leah leading you through each step, you'll take over the kitchen to make almond kiss blondies, her homage to the discontinued Barton's Almond Kisses that once filled Passover dessert tables across New York City. Working in small groups, you'll practice browning butter until fragrant; see how the use of almond in three different ways creates remarkable depth of flavor; and get Leah's thoughts on every ingredient in this pantry-friendly recipe, from which flour is her favorite to whether your almonds should be roasted. While the blondies bake, we’ll sit down for a family-style dinner prepared by our team featuring dishes drawn from Leah's earlier book, "Portico: Cooking and Feasting in Rome's Jewish Kitchen." You'll taste slices of chocolate salami and enjoy your homemade blondies warm out of the oven. Afterward, have your copy of "The Dessert Table," included with your ticket, signed by Leah. And, like any strategic attendee of a party with a good dessert table, you're encouraged to bring a tupperware with you—there's guaranteed to be desserts for the taking.About Leah: Leah Koenig is the author of seven previous cookbooks, including the IACP Award–winning Portico: Cooking and Feasting in Rome’s Jewish Kitchen.
