- **Event Name**: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder
- **Event Start and End Date**: Mon, 05 Oct, 2026 at 10:00 pm (+00:00)
- **Event Description**: Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder, or ARFID, is now recognized as a formal diagnosis within the Feeding and Eating Disorders section of DSM-5. Unlike anorexia nervosa or bulimia nervosa, ARFID is not driven by weight or shape concerns. Instead, it describes clinically significant food avoidance or restriction that may be related to sensory sensitivity, fear of aversive consequences such as choking or vomiting, and/or limited interest in eating or food.

This distinction is important because many children, adolescents, and adults present with eating difficulties that do not fit traditional eating disorder profiles, yet may still experience significant nutritional, developmental, medical, and psychosocial consequences. ARFID can be associated with nutritional deficiency, weight loss or poor growth, reliance on supplements or tube feeding, and meaningful interference with daily functioning.

This 6-week online course will focus on Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for ARFID, or CBT-AR, a flexible, modular treatment developed and refined at Massachusetts General Hospital for patients ages 10 through older adulthood. The course will cover ARFID assessment, patient appropriateness for CBT-AR, and implementation of all four stages of treatment.
