Retreat Experts:
Mike Wells has a PhD in Biogeography from San Diego State University and University of California Santa Barbara. Dr. Wells is a retired Colorado Desert District Superintendent, he was also manager of the State Parks prescribed fire program for nine years. Dr. Wells was instrumental in initiating the Cuyamaca Rancho State Parks Reforestation Project and has been involved with the project since its inception in 2007. He is currently a retired annuitant and science advisor to the project. He is a lecturer at the University of San Diego where he has taught Conservation Biology and Desert Ecology.
Fred Jee, a former State Park Ranger and one of the original founding members of the Borrego Springs Film Festival, has dedicated 39 years to enhancing the Borrego Springs community. His work with the Anza-Borrego Foundation and the Anza-Borrego Desert Natural History Association has been pivotal in showcasing the unique attributes of the Anza-Borrego Desert.
Beyond his professional contributions, Fred has been deeply involved in various community roles. He has influenced the Borrego Springs Chamber of Commerce for over a decade as both President and board member and has driven cultural initiatives as a volunteer and board president at the Borrego Springs Performing Arts Center.
Fred’s expertise extends into the region’s geography and its intriguing military history, particularly World War II training operations, providing filmmakers and historians alike with valuable insights. His in-depth knowledge and location-fixing skills make him a sought-after resource for filmmakers seeking to capture the authentic and visually captivating landscapes of Borrego Springs.
His commitment to enriching his community through nonprofit work, cultural leadership, and historical education underscores his integral role in Borrego Springs’ ongoing development and preservation.
