- **Event Description**: We are back with our winter seed sowing workshop, now split into 2 events! For this first in our series, we will explore how to successfully fall-and-winter sow native plant seeds in outdoor containers for guaranteed germination the following spring. This event will briefly cover the different types of seed dormancy before workshopping different winter sowing techniques using multiple species/types of native plants seeds while utilizing different containers. 

Participants will get to take home their own winter-sown seeds. All containers, seeds, and soils are provided, but a $5 donation is encouraged to help cover material costs. 

Meet at the Forest Education Center. This event is held indoors. 

The host of the event is Deam Lake SRA Assistant Property Manager and former native plant nursery owner Matt Darling. Please RSVP to MDarling2@dnr.IN.gov to reserve a spot. This class is limited to 35 participants. 

This workshop is designed for adults and children 12 and up. 

Don’t miss the second workshop in this series, entitled "Artificial Stratification," which will take place Friday, Jan. 16th 2026. For this workshop we will take a deeper dive into the different types of seed dormancy and how to break each via artificial stratification methods and other techniques.
