SWIM COURSE INFORMATION We swim across the lake (approximately 500 meters) using large, round buoys that mark the course, so swimmers can easily sight them and stay on track. This setup also helps athletes practice open water “orienting,” which is important for triathlon swim courses. Beginners are welcome and supported by kayakers and experienced swimmers throughout practice. We swim a continuous loop around only the marked buoys. Athletes must remain in the water for the duration of the swim and follow the designated swim course. IMPORTANT SAFETY RULES — STRICTLY ENFORCED Membership Required Only paid Landsharks members may participate in open water swim practice during scheduled club sessions. All swimmers must sign in and sign out before entering and exiting the water. Non-members, family members, and spectators are welcome to watch from the beach, but are not permitted in the water during club practice times. No solo swimming is allowed outside of scheduled practice sessions, even for members. Pink Swim Caps Required All swimmers must wear a pink swim cap so kayakers and safety volunteers can easily identify club swimmers. If you do not have one, extras will be available on-site. Swim Buoys Required Every swimmer must use a swim buoy. This is mandatory safety equipment that increases visibility in open water. If you do not own one, loaners will be available. Scheduled Practice Only Open-water swimming is permitted only during official Louisville Landsharks scheduled practice sessions. Swimming outside of these designated times is not allowed. This policy is in place to protect our continued access to the lake and ensure safety standards are maintained for all athletes. Thank you for respecting these guidelines. Sighting buoys will be removed once the final swimmer returns or around 8:15 AM. SWIM DAY TIPS Arrive Early A brief safety overview will be held before entering the water. Gates open and are staffed starting at 7:00 AM. Arriving early may help avoid the park entrance fee. Let Someone Know if You're Nervous Open water swimming can feel intimidating at first, and that is completely normal. Many members are available to swim alongside you, provide guidance, or help you feel more comfortable. Everyone starts somewhere.
