“This Is Pop?” è il titolo di una canzone che sta dentro *White Music*, il primo album degli XTC.

Era il 1978 e Andy Partridge la scrisse come risposta ai giornalisti che, in quel momento di estrema effervescenza per la scena musicale britannica, si chiedevano come diavolo inquadrare quei suoni che di lì a poco sarebbero stati rubricati — e ricordati ancora oggi — con il termine post punk.

Partridge, con la sua abituale ironia, rispondeva a una domanda con un’altra domanda, giungendo alla conclusione — rivelatrice per quanto banale — che quella musica era solo e semplicemente Pop.

Il Pop, per lui come per noi, è la musica della vita: quella che abbiamo conosciuto attraverso le canzoni dei The Beatles e degli The Who, che è stata maneggiata da The Velvet Underground, The Sonics e The Stooges, rimiscelata da Television e Ramones, Joy Division e Gang of Four.

Pop sono tutte le canzoni che abbiamo amato e che ameremo, ascoltate in casa nostra o ballate in un qualunque All Tomorrow’s Parties a cui abbiamo partecipato o parteciperemo.

Perché il punto interrogativo alla fine? Perché Andy Partridge ce lo ha messo e perché a noi le certezze non piacciono. Come declamava il maestro Edoardo Bennato: nessuna verità è poi così sicura, ci sono troppi dubbi, non fartene un problema.
