Pegmatites
Pegmatites bodies are most commonly found in and around granitic intrusions. They are historically important sources of feldspar, micas, and quartz, as well as hosting various metals including thorium, uranium, beryllium, lithium and tungsten. Because of the large crystal sizes, pegmatites have also been a favorite of mineral collectors, particularly for beryl and tourmaline. These same deposits have had renewed interest as potential sources of lithium for use in electric vehicle batteries. This presentation will discuss the origin and occurrence of pegmatites, with physical specimens from various pegmatite bodies.
