- **Event Description**: Geologic History of the Snake River Plain: Tectonic Assembly of the North American Cordillera followed by Yellowstone Hotspot VolcanismAbout this EventDr. Maley is ill and the lecture on July 26 is canceled.This lecture covers the origin and evolution of the Snake River Plain with emphasis on tectonic and volcanic events. The Snake River Plain has long been recognized as an enigmatic feature with global geologic significance. It is also recognized as one of the most important volcanic provinces on Earth. Recent research shows the Snake River Plain was at least partly if not entirely caused by the Yellowstone hotspot. 1pm at Idaho Museum of Mining and Geology, 2455 Old Penitentiary Rd. Boise, Idaho 83712. General admission $5, Museum members free. Pre-registration is required.There will be a follow-up field trip (Western Snake River Plain) led by Dr. Maley on August 8 from 8-11am, near and around Table Rock. Minimal walking. See Museum website for link.About Dr. Maley: Terry Maley has B.S. and M.S. degrees in geology from Oregon State University and a Ph.D. in geology from the University of Idaho. He has been an avid field observer, photographer, and illustrator of geological features during more than 50 years of fieldwork. Now retired, he worked many years for the Department of the Interior conducting geologic investigations throughout the western United States. Before joining the Interior Department, Terry was a marine geologist of the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office for eight years participating in 15 worldwide expeditions. He also served as Administrator for the Idaho Division of Earth Resources for five years with responsibility over all mineral resources, water resources, and geological research in Idaho. He has authored more than 50 technical papers on geological features and has written ten books on regional geology, field geology and mineral law.
