About Tate Sawyer: Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, Sawyer's lifelong passion for history. They are currently in their final semester at Boise State University, where they are studying history with aspirations of pursuing a master's degree in public history. During their time at Boise State, they have developed a strong interest in social movements throughout history. Sawyer has been volunteering with the Idaho State Historical Society since 2024, during which time they have contributed to and participated in numerous programs and events. The Shirt Factory is central to the evolution of the Old Idaho Penitentiary and the changing philosophy of corrections. From idle time to prison industries, the conflict between free and prison labor, the use of work as rehabilitation, and eventually recreation, the Shirt Factory took on many different identities as both the prison and society evolved.
