In October 2002, he reported for active duty as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Immediately after leaving active duty in August 2007, he entered the federal defense community, starting as an assistant federal public defender in the Alexandria office of the Federal Public Defender for the Eastern District of Virginia. In May 2009, he moved home after getting a job with the Douglas County (NE) Public Defender’s Office. This proved to be a short (but wonderful) stay because an AFPD position opened in the Omaha office, where he has been for the past 16 years. He became the Federal Public Defender in 2024John Reichmuth is a Supervisory Assistant Federal Public Defender in Oakland, California. He has been involved in firearms training and litigation for more than 20 years. He has previously held certifications as an armorer (Beretta 90-series, Glock, M-16/AR-15/M4), range safety officer, and firearms instructor. He is a graduate of Stanford Law School and clerked for the Hon. William Wayne Justice (E.D. Tx).Juval O. Scott is a nationally recognized leader in public defense, civil rights, and sentencing reform. She joined The Bronx Defenders as its executive director in 2024 and is the first African American and woman of color to lead the almost 30-year-old organization.Immediately prior to joining The Bronx Defenders, Scott served as the director of the National Sentencing Resource Counsel where she led a team responsible for formulating sentencing policy, engaging with the United States Sentencing Commission, and other agencies and organizations, and providing training and sentencing litigation support to federal defense practitioners throughout the country.Previously, Scott was a federal public defender for the Western District of Virginia, after appointment by the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals. Before that, she served as an attorney advisor with the Defender Services Office in Washington, DC., and as assistant public defender in the Milwaukee office of the Federal Defender Services of Wisconsin, Inc. and with the Indiana Federal Community Defenders in Indianapolis, Indiana.In addition to her public defense work, Scott has served as an adjunct professor at the Washington & Lee School of Law and regularly teaches on panel trainings and programs sponsored by the Defender Services Office Training Division, The National Criminal Defense College, National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers and its state affiliates, and other organizations dedicated to criminal legal and reform issues.Scott is a proud graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana, where she received her Bachelor of Science in Biology with a minor in Chemistry, and the Indiana University Robert H. McKinney School of Law.Alison K. Guernsey is the Herschel G. Langdon Clinical Professor of Trial Advocacy at University of Iowa College of Law where she directs the law school’s Federal Criminal Defense Clinic. Under her supervision, law students represent indigent people charged with federal offenses in the U.S. District Courts for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, as well as various federal courts of appeals. Prof. Guernsey’s Clinic is one of only two trial-level federal criminal defense clinics in the nation. Following the passage of the First Step Act of 2018, Prof. Guernsey started the Clinic’s “Decarceration Project,” with the goals of seeking the release of people serving inordinately long terms of imprisonment---regardless of their crimes---and minimizing the impact of the carceral system on people once they are released. Before joining Iowa Law, Professor Guernsey was the Supervising Attorney with the Federal Defenders of Eastern Washington; a term law clerk for the Honorable Michael J. Melloy, U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit; and a term law clerk for the Honorable Karen Nelson Moore, U.S Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit.Brad Calbo was admitted to the bar in 1994. For most of his professional life, Brad has been a criminal defense attorney, as the Chief Felony Public Defender for Twin Falls County and then as a Felony Contract Public Defender, and then in private practice. During his private practice, he was appointed to the CJA panel and most notably worked as co-counsel on the Babichenko case and eventual trial in 2022 along with many of our colleagues. He is currently not practicing as an attorney but rather working as an investigator for the SPD and for the CJA panel. He worked side by side with Doug Nelson on the Murphy case getting the alternate perpetrator evidence admitted before the jury leading to their client’s eventual acquittal.Sean Broderick is the National Litigation Support Administrator for the Administrative Office of U.S. Courts, Defender Services Office Training Division. He is responsible for the National Litigation Support Team, which is a resource for the federal judiciary, federal defender offices, and Criminal Justice Act (CJA) panel attorneys regarding issues involving electronic discovery and litigation support technology. Mr. Broderick is the co-chair of the Joint Working Group on Electronic Technology in the Criminal Justice System (JETWG), a joint Administrative Office of the U.S. Courts and Department of Justice national working group which examines the use of technology in the federal criminal justice system and provides suggested practices for the efficient and cost-effective management of electronic discovery. He is a co-author of Criminal e-Discovery: A Pocket Guide for Judges (Federal Judicial Center, 2015) and a contributing author to The Sedona Conference's Primer on Managing Electronic Discovery in Small Cases (2023). Most recently, he co-authored "Understanding the Risks of Generative AI Discovery Review Results" in ABA Criminal Justice Magazine (May 2026).John Ellis Before entering private practice, Mr. Ellis spent 13 years at Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. as a trial attorney and a supervisory attorney. He currently handles a wide variety of criminal cases, including white-collar fraud, terrorism, computer crimes, child pornography offenses, and complex drug offenses. In addition to his trial work, Mr. Ellis is a certified cell phone examiner, and is known nationally for his work as a trainer in the area of digital forensics, electronic case management, and social media investigations. He routinely presents at the National Forensic College in New York City and the Capital Case Defense Seminar in California. Mr. Ellis serves as a member of the Legal Resource Committee as part of the Organization of Scientific Area Committees for Forensic Science (OSAC), which is administered by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). He is a founding member of the San Diego ESI Forum, an organization focused on educating the bar about electronic discovery. John is also an adjunct professor and the author of two chapters in Defending a Federal Criminal Case. Mr. Ellis graduated from the University of San Diego School of Law in 2003.Katie Hurrelbrink is an appellate attorney at Federal Defenders of San Diego, Inc. For 6 and a half years the case remained “open-unsolved.” Whitney’s husband, Jim Murphy, was arrested in March of 2021 and charged with first degree M**der. Before the State took over all public defense, Jim Murphy was represented by Cassia County public defenders, but was allowed to represent himself for a full year before Doug took over the case in late 2024. Jim remained incarcerated for 4 and a half years while this case played out in District Court. On February 18th, 2026, a jury found Jim not guilty of killing his wife and he walked out of J*il a free man later that day.
