Our February Breakfast Club features Ellise A. Smith and her talk, Threads of Resilience: Reclaiming Our Stories to Build Community Connection.

When we share our stories, we begin to heal. When we turn those stories into art, we build bridges and connection. In this interactive and deeply personal conversation, Ellise explores how creative expression can serve as a powerful tool for processing experience, managing emotions, and fostering meaningful connection within ourselves and our communities. Attendees will leave with new ways to think about transforming personal narratives into creative expression that supports both inner growth and collective understanding.

About the Speaker:

Ellise Antoinette Smith brings an incredible depth of experience and passion for social justice to the spaces she occupies through storytelling, history, and education. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, she is an intentional scholar-activist, creative visionary, and advocate for historically silenced narratives, bringing a unique interdisciplinary approach to her work.

Through photography (#VisualActivism), podcasting, spoken word poetry, and social media, Ellise centers the voices and experiences of communities that have historically gone unheard. As a doctoral student, her academic work focuses on creating celebratory spaces for marginalized identities, challenging dominant ideologies, and ensuring these voices are heard and valued both within and beyond academia.

Her recent recognitions include the 2025 IU Indianapolis Dr. Martin Luther King Persistent Pathfinder of Justice Award, the 2025 Women’s History Month Award, and the 2026 American Council on Education Women’s Network Indiana Distinguished Woman Leader Award.
