Who is Geeta Rabari, and why the whole diaspora knows her name
If you grew up on Garba, your feet already know her songs. Geeta Rabari is the biggest folk voice Gujarat has produced in a decade, and she got there from a village most maps skip. Born in Tappar, a small village in Kutch, into a traditional Rabari family, she started singing bhajans in the fifth standard and turned professional by 20. In 2018, her debut track “Rona Ser Ma” became the first Gujarati song to cross 500 million views on YouTube, the number that turned a village girl into a household name in every Gujarati kitchen from Ahmedabad to Ontario.
She never traded the village in for the fame, though, and that is the part people love. She still performs in traditional Kutchi mirror-work ghagra cholis. She still sounds like the earth she came from: rustic, powerful, and impossible to sit still through. Her setlist reads like a diaspora playlist, from “Desi Dhol Vage” and “Eklo Rabari” to the devotional “Shree Ram Ghar Aaye.” She has filled halls in the UK and France, and she has been honoured by the World Book of Records at the British Parliament in London.

Gates open 6:00 PM, music from 7:00 PM, and gates close at 8:00 PM, so do not stroll in at 8:15 and act surprised. Early Bird tickets are $40 CAD and Regular is $45. Notice the dates. September 5 and 6 are the Saturday and Sunday of the Labour Day long weekend. Translation: you can dance raas garba until midnight and still have all of Monday to recover. Somebody planned this well.
