The programme opens with Malcolm Arnold’s graceful Serenade for Small Orchestra. Peter Martens then takes centre stage in Shostakovich’s Cello Concerto No. 1, a powerful and technically demanding work renowned for its emotional depth, driving rhythms and striking dialogue between soloist and orchestra.

Richard Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos – Overture and Dance Scene brings theatrical richness and expressive colour to the programme. Poulenc’s spirited Sinfonietta concludes the evening with charm, humour and unmistakable French flair.
