- **Event Name**: Make Your Own Plant Pot (Bonsai)
- **Event Start and End Date**: Sat, 09 May, 2026 at 12:00 am – Sat, 09 May, 2026 at 02:00 am (+12:00)
- **Event Description**: Create a truly personal piece of pottery at this relaxed and hands-on workshop. In this session, each participant will be given 500g of clay to design and make their own bonsai pot. 500g pot that size will likely suit: Shohin bonsai (under ~20 cm tall)Or even mame bonsai (super miniature, under ~10 cm). You are free to shape and create any style you like, and if you don’t have a bonsai tree, you can make a plant pot instead.

You’ll learn basic hand-building using a mix of pinch pot and slab techniques and how to shape clay step-by-step, guided by an experienced tutor. No pottery experience is needed.. this workshop is perfect for beginners and curious makers. No pottery wheel involved.

Once your pot is complete, it will be professionally glazed and kiln-fired. Your finished piece will be waterproof and ready to use once firing is complete.

What to Bring / Wear

Wear clothes you don’t mind getting clay on. Pottery can be messy, and clay may leave marks even with care.

If you have long nails or are pregnant and prefer to protect your hands, please bring thin disposable gloves, as long nails can sometimes create small cracks in the clay which can create cracks before even hitting the kiln.

You’re welcome to bring a pot you’d like to replicate. Alternatively, you can choose your own glaze if you prefer.

I will be glazing your piece with a clear glaze, which allows the natural colour of the clay to show through. We will be using white stoneware clay for this.

If you’d like to use a different glaze, please bring a cone 5–6 brush-on glaze with you to the class. Choose one that does not indicate it “may run” or is described as “runny.” Glaze must be compatible with stoneware clay.

You can purchase suitable glazes from Botpots.co.nz, CCG.co.nz, or Nelson Pottery Supply.

Glaze is the colour applied to your piece before the final firing. This option is ideal if you’d prefer something other than a clear glaze and would like a colour that better suits your bonsai tree.

The photo above is an example of clear glaze applied on a terracotta clay.

I’ll apply your chosen glaze after first firing and return any leftover glaze to you.

Note:

Bring your own ruler.
If you’d like to replicate a specific pot, feel free to bring one along to use as a template. You’ll also need scissors, a pen, and some newspaper.
If you’re planning to create a rustic pinch pot instead, you won’t need to bring these extra items.
Bringing a pot as a template is recommended if you prefer not to make a pinch pot.
