- **Event Description**: Join local naturalists for an evening bat walk at Marton Mere,  listening for bats around the reserve & opening a  moth trap at the end.About this EventJoin local naturalists and Friends of Marton Mere for an evening walk looking and listening for bats around the reserve.As light fades, we’ll explore areas where bats are likely to be feeding and moving through the landscape, learning more about these fascinating nocturnal mammals and the habitats they rely on. Bat detectors may be used during the walk to help pick up the calls that are normally beyond human hearing — nature’s own little radio show, just with more midges.Bats regularly recorded around the Mere are Common, Soprano and Nathusius's Pipistrelle, Noctule and Daubentons.Prior to the walk we will have set a moth trap up and and on completion of teh bat walk, we will open the moth trap and attempt to identify and moths that we have trapped, prior to releasing them.This will be a gentle walk, with the route and pace depending on conditions on the evening.No specialist equipment is needed, but a torch or head-lamp may be useful. Binoculars are always handy if you have them (whilst we do have some light left), although admittedly bats do like to make that a sporting challenge. Please wear suitable footwear and dress for the weather.Timings are approximate and may be subject to change depending on weather, site conditions and bat activity.
