- **Event Description**: Bicyclists and hikers will be able to access and cross the Missouri River at Cochrane Dam on National Public Lands Day - Saturday, September 27th 2025 between the hours of 9 AM and 3 PM.

While normally only available as an out and back hike or ride, opening the crossing for public access on this day will allow trail users to make a loop and hike or ride both sides of the river on the same trip. If those are starting and ending in separate locations, participants should know that Park staff will not provide a shuttle.

Participants are advised to be prepared for a 5+ mile round trip strenuous hike through prairie landscape. A reminder that there is very little shade during the entirety of the trip, no access to water for you or your pets, and that this is rattlesnake country. Bikes must be walked across the dam and pets must be on a leash while on the dam.

Trail users should expect to experience heavier than normal traffic during this event, and bicyclists should control their speed, yield to all, stay to the right except when passing, and ring a bell or call out before passing. A few areas of the trail are rated as moderately difficult and riders should plan accordingly. 

Popular starting locations to access Cochrane Dam:

1. South Shore
-Lewis and Clark Overlook 0.5 miles paved trail and 3.0 miles natural surface trail. 

2. North Shore
-Rainbow Trailhead 2.5 miles gravel service road or 3. 5 miles natural surface trail.
-Ryan Trailhead 3.0 miles natural surface trail.
