THE RISE OF THE FAR RIGHT IN THE UK
The UK has played host to far right politics as far back as the 1920s, with the focus before World War Two being largely anti-Semitic. The more pronounced racial elements started to dominate the space following the influx of immigrants from South Asia and the West Indies in the 70’s and 80’s, when groups such as the National Front and the British National Party came to prominence. However, things have taken a more sinister route over the last ten years with groups such as Britain First, English Defence League and National Action focussing their hatred on Muslims and running campaigns primarily against immigration, multiculturalism and what it sees as the Islamisation of the United Kingdom. In this workshop, Ivan Humble will discuss his own personal journey in and out of the EDL and Matthew Feldman will present to us how and why these developments have occurred.
